The Leica M4-2 is a mechanical 35mm film rangefinder camera introduced in 1977 as an evolution of the M4 model to optimize production processes. The camera body is constructed with a die-cast zinc top plate and an aluminum alloy chassis featuring a black chrome finish. The viewing system integrates a 0.72x magnification viewfinder with frame lines for 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, and 135mm lenses, which are automatically activated by the Leica M bayonet mount. The mechanical rubberized silk focal-plane shutter offers shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/1000th of a second, plus Bulb (B), with flash synchronization set at 1/50th of a second via the hot shoe or PC sync socket. Unlike previous models, the M4-2 is factory-ready for use with an external motor drive (Winder M) through a mechanical coupling located on the base. The device lacks an integrated light meter and requires the use of an external meter or manual setting of exposure parameters. The film loading system is the rapid three-prong type and rewinding is handled by a slanted crank located on the top plate.
